SPANISH REINFORCED-CONCRETE MOTOR SHIP.
The first reinforced-conerete cargo boat built in Spain is at present in the port of Bareclona carrying out equipment operations; and preparing to receive the Boilinder internal-combustion motor, which may arrive at any moment.
This vessel has been built by the Construcciones y Pavimentos Co. Ltd., which makes a speciality of, and has acquired a reputation for, the execution of important works of every kind in
ferro-concrete. This company wished to give obvious, proofs of its skill by building this cargo
boat, though it was aware beforehand that the lack of space on the temporary slips used for the construction would ultimately render the launching of the
vessela, very dangerous business.
The severe trial to which the vessel was subjected at, the moment of launching and
which, according to experts, no steel or wooden vessel could have withstood, fully confirms the hopes entertained as regards the strength of ferro-concrete for naval construction work and shows how justified is the success and development of the same in foreign countries where vessels of as much as 10,000 tons burden are being
built.
It must he pointed out that this vessel is an experimental one, and that the constructing company intends it to ply for its own account, pending the launching of the vessels of 1,200 tons burden which it has begun to build at its large yards in
Malgrat.
