S.M.S. NIXE Builder: Danzig Dockyard. Laid down: 1883. Launched: 23/7 1885. Completed: 1/4 1886. Displacement: 1951t Dimension: 63.3 oa, 54.35 wl x 13.2 x 6.36 m Machinery: 1-shaft, hoisting screw, HC, 733ihp = 10 kts Armament: 8-125mm Complement: 358 Though a hopeless anachronism as a fighting ship the Nixe, with her full rig and wood and copper-sheathed bottom was useful as a school ship, though she was a bad seaboat and awkward under sail. Her armament was later changed by the removal of first one gun, then a second, and the addition of two 88mm. In 1900 she was relegated to being a workshop ship, and from 1901 to 1906 she was used as an office at Kiel. Hulked 1910. She was broken up in 1916. |
