U.S.S. BURTON ISLAND (AGB-1)

A Navy icebreaker of the Wind Class built by Western Pipe Co., San Pedro, California, commisioned December 1946. Her primary mission is to clear a safe channel and escort supply ships through the polar regions.

U.S.S. STATEN ISLAND (AGB-5)

This 6.000 ton Navy Icebreaker was land-leased to Russia immediately following her completion in 1944 at San Pedro, California. Since she was returned in 1951 her primary mission has been to clear a path through the polar icepacks for ships re-supplying remote scientific installations.
